Abstract

Objective: to analyze the determinants of soybean production and imports in Mexico, during the period 1990-2020.


Design/methodology/approach: Two econometric models using lineal models were estimated to evaluate the relationships between the variable’s soybean production and harvested area and soybean production and imports.


Results: It was found that soybean production in Mexico is explained by the increase in harvested area, because of the expansion of the internal market and the reconversion of soybean crop areas. In the second model, it was verified that imports are explained by the limited national production. Proposals for actions are presented to increase the national production of soybeans.


Limitations on study/implications: The models require considering new variables to enrich the determinants and improve the proposal of public policy actions.


Findings/conclusions: The low rate of national coverage and the high dependence on imports make it necessary to implement actions to increase the national productive capacity. A group of specific actions are proposed.

Francisco Garcia, University Autonomous of Tamaulipas

Economist (Belarus State University, Minsk, 1984). Doctor in Economic and Business Sciences from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain (1997) and Doctor in Economics from the University of Havana, Cuba (1999). He is currently a full-time professor at the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas, Victoria School of Commerce and Administration. Coordinator of the Regional Studies Laboratory. He has been a professor-researcher at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Havana (1983-2003), teaching undergraduate, master's and doctorate courses in macroeconomics, political economy, development economics, economic policy. He is a member of the SNI since 2008. Currently SNI, level 2.

Martín Alfredo Legarreta-González, Universidad Tecnológica de Tarahumara/University of Makeny, Sierra Leone.

Zootechnical Veterinary Doctor (UAA”AN”), with a Master of Science in Agribusiness Development and Master of Statistics (UACH) and a Doctorate in Probability and Statistics from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. He has been a professor for more than 30 years and a researcher with projects with national and international support. He has publications in JCR magazines, as well as outreach. He is a CONACyT ex-scholarship holder and SEP Complementary Scholarship holder. He has received national recognition such as the "Desirable Profile" of PROMEP and the National System of Researchers, of which he is Level I. He has carried out national (UAT) and international (University of Costa Rica) academic and research stays. He has trained national and international human resources, with research that seeks to solve local, regional and international problems. He is currently doing a postdoctoral stay at the Autonomous Agrarian University "Antonio Narro" and is an adjunct professor and consultant at the University of Makeni (UniMak) in Sierra Leone, subject professor and researcher at the Technological University of Tarahumara, External Affiliated Academic, of the Laboratory of Regional Studies, of the Victoria Faculty of Commerce and Administration, of the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas and is part of the Administrative Council of the Municipal Board of Water and Sanitation of Meoqui, Chihuahua as representative of the Academic and Research Sector, for the second term consecutive.

Antonio Galván Vera, University Autonomous of Tamaulipas

Antonio Galván Vera is an economist from the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT). Master and Doctor in economics from the University of Salamanca, Spain, creditor of different national and international distinctions. In the academy he has contributed as a teacher for 18 years at the UAT and in his scientific outreach work, he has written several academic articles. Additionally, he is a member of the National System of Researchers of Conacyt. He has been a member of international associations such as the Strategic Management Society, The Academy of Management, The Center of Advanced Studies in Finance. The European Financial Management Association Meetings, Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard University. In the field of public administration, he has served in various municipal, state, and federal government orders in the areas of marketing, financing, planning, economic development, project evaluation, and public policy, among others. He currently serves as Head of a Development Bank in the entity where the efficient use of resources for public works and services is promoted. Likewise, in the private sphere he collaborates in a business integrator firm focused on economic-administrative management, he is also a partner in a rural production unit with a focus on sustainable agribusiness in cattle production.
