Abstract
The use of coproducts and byproducts to obtain derivatives from the sugar agroindustry are emerging elements that are accelerating the competitiveness of the sector. In the specialized literature diversification can be appreciated in numerous studies, considering it as a strategic axis within the techno-economic paradigm. However, the findings continue to be fragmented and subject to controversy, and there is no consensus with regard to the concept, definition and way of establishing an adequate strategy to implement it. A review is presented in this study of the uses, byproducts, coproducts and derivatives of sugar cane, as well as the technological innovations from a historical, socioeconomic and technological context; and the perspectives of the sugar cane sector are analyzed within the paradigm of bioeconomy, bioproducts and biorefineries.
