Abstract

Sheep production in Mexico is performed under systems of traditional grazing, with scarce technology and low productivity. In it, they are characterized and distinguished by regions; the northern, which bases its production on wool sheep and meat breeds with technified systems; the central region, which produces crossed livestock (Suffolk or Hampshire and hair breeds), and is carried out importantly in marginalized zones, pasture lands, and agricultural terrains with agricultural residues. The southern and southeastern regions are described with tropical characteristics where hair breeds stand out (Pelibuey and Black Belly), although currently specialized breeds have been incorporated for meat production (Dorper and Katahdin). A revision is presented about the indicators and productive variables with sheep in the livestock sector in Mexico.
