Abstract

One of the objectives of knowledge generation in a society is that information be transferred, to attain the improvement of the quality of life of people and their environment. Studies about controlled reproduction in captivity of the tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) in the Tropical Aquiculture Laboratory of Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco (DACbiol-UJAT) have helped in the development of competences and abilities of social organizations in southeastern México. Stemming from this new knowledge, the organizations have been able to take advantage of this valuable water resource in a sustainable manner and to increase the understanding of what this species provides to the ecosystem in the floodplain in Tabasco, México. The empowering process of various social actors (producers, rural communities, children, universities) related to breeding of tropical gar, was examined, with relevant results for the systematization of information regarding the development of competences and abilities of social organizations. The review considered close to 30 years of records of university research and extension work.
