Abstract

Objective: The aim of this essay is to carry out a bibliometric analysis to understand the scientific production in the thematic area of ​​alternative tourism and agrotourism as variables under study. Topics related to the definitions of bibliometric analysis and alternative tourism are addressed.


Design/methodology/approach: Bibliometric analysis on alternative tourism is essential to reveal the trends and impact of this sector in the academic and practical field. By studying the scientific production, citations and collaboration networks in this field, emerging research areas, knowledge gaps and the most relevant topics that concern experts were identified. The essay analyses the scientific production on alternative tourism and agrotourism using a bibliometric approach, using tools such as VOSviewer and Scopus and Google Scholar databases.


Results: Alternative tourism, defined as a recreational activity in harmony with the natural and cultural environment, has experienced remarkable growth since the 1970s. This approach, together with agrotourism, promotes a positive impact on local development, environmental sustainability and the cultural strengthening of rural communities. The bibliometric analysis identified 6,265 records in Scopus, of which 115 belongs to Mexico, evidencing the academic interest in this field. The topics in relationship with alternative tourism are sustainable development, climate change and environmental impact, highlighting the need to integrate the issue of climate change as a cross-cutting theme in tourism policies.


Findings/conclusions: The document concludes that alternative tourism and agrotourism represent key tools for resilience and sustainable development.
