Abstract
Objective: To analyze the main indicators associated with the cultural management of the buffalo system ranching in southern Veracruz, Mexico (Acayucan, Sayula, Minatitlán, Soconusco, Hidalgotitlán, San Juan Evangelista, Las Choapas, Oluta, Jesús Carranza and Valle de Uxpanapan municipalities), for sustainable development.
Design/methodology/approach: The method of analysis of the present investigation was quantitative and the instrument was a questionnaire, the results were processed in the statistical software DYANE ver. 4.0 and the sustainability indicators were developed from three transversal axes (social, economic and productive).
Results: We found high values in the economic indicators, because the producers perceive that the cattle activity with buffaloes is a profitable business.
Study limitations/implications: In the productive axis corresponded to the socio-cultural pattern of livestock in the tropics, which is perpetuated generation after generation by the social system in which it is inserted; however, it is recommended to develop the potential in the productive and economic axis towards the sustainability of the buffalo system.
Findings/conclusions: Indicators of the economic axis are highlighted, due to the perception of profitability; but it is necessary to carry out activities for sustainable development in the economic, social and productive axes.
