Abstract

Objective: To analyze the process of coffee production and marketing in the community of Cerro Cuate, Iliatenco in the Mountain region of Guerrero, Mexico.
Design/methodology/approach: the study was carried out by; 1) documentary research), 2) selection of the study area, 3) structured interview with open questions to 22 coffee growers, supported with the sectional survey technique and the interview cards tool, and 4) analysis of the information. The sample size was defined by the convenience sampling method, and the selection of the units of analysis by the snowball technique.
Results: The predominant coffee production system was the rustic mountain system, interspersed with banana and fruit trees. The maximum productivity of the plantations is reached from 5.5 to 7.5 years of age, the renovation of plants is done at 12 years. Coffee yield was 3.7 kg per plant per year. The production of coffee is mainly done by men (77.3%), between 56 and 70 years of age. The sale is made in the presentation of coffee capulín in bulk to intermediaries, to the ARIC, to CAFECO, to the Union of Ejidos and to the Organization Mixtrui.
Limitations of the study/implications: An improvement proposal is given to favor the process of production, benefit and marketing of coffee.
Findings/conclusions: Coffea arabica is the main coffee grown, with the varieties Typica, Caturra, Mundo Novo, Garnica and Bourbon. The factors that limit its production and quality are the lack of planning in crop management and not having technical advice.
